Roy Weitzell
Director
A native of Fairfax, Virginia, Roy grew up spending much of his time in the great outdoors. As a child, he occupied himself with hiking, fishing, and general exploration activities, and from all of this, learned to love nature both as a child and now as an adult.

In college, Roy pursued a major in marine biology and earned his B.S. in this area of study from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. He then went on to earn an M.S. in Zoology at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. Finally, Roy went on to earn a PhD in Environmental Science from the University of Maryland.

At present, Roy serves as the Aquatic Laboratory Director at the Eden Hall Campus of Chatham University, a position he has held since 2015. In this role, Roy runs an aquaculture laboratory where he and his students raise various types of fish and other aquatic organisms. Additionally, Roy teaches several classes on campus related to sustainable aquaculture and riparian ecology/watershed science. He also hosts workshops related to aquaponics.
In 2019, Roy joined the Glade Run Lake Conservancy where he provides his expertise on projects related to water quality analysis, GIS mapping, conservation easements, and other tasks related to the health and vitality of the watershed.

In his spare time, Roy enjoys playing blue grass music, going on hikes, and fishing. One of his favorite memories of time spent at Glade Run Lake was when he and his son spent the day catching rainbow trout.
